Practical guidelines for preparing your CNC, laser-cut, and 3D printed designs. Check the essentials before requesting a quote.

01 / Three-dimensional parts

CNC machining design guidelines

Upload your final solid model to the CNC quote tool. Confirm the preview, dimensions, material, and thread details before adding the part to your cart.

RequirementOnline quoting
File formatSTEP or STP; one solid body per file. The current upload limit is 25 MB.
Overall sizeUp to 14 × 14 × 14 inches (355.6 × 355.6 × 355.6 mm) for instant quoting. Stock availability and geometry can still require review.
Quantity1–20 pieces per quoted part. For 21 or more, request a custom quote.
ToleranceStandard CNC machining tolerance: ±0.005 inch (±0.127 mm).
Tapped holesSpecify up to three supported tap sizes with hole counts. More sizes, unlisted threads, or more than 100 tapped holes per part require manual quoting.
MaterialChoose a listed material in the quote tool. Use the materials guide for current options.

Make the model unambiguous

  • Export one finished solid, not an assembly or open surface model.
  • Model the pockets, holes, slots, and other features you need.
  • Declare the correct units and verify the dimensions after import.
  • Remove unrelated geometry and obsolete part versions.
  • Send a drawing for information the model cannot clearly communicate.

Specify threads and critical fits

  • Select the required thread sizes and hole counts in the quoting tool.
  • Provide a drawing identifying threaded holes, thread depth, and blind or through conditions.
  • Do not rely on a cosmetic thread in CAD to communicate a thread requirement.
  • Call out bearing fits, press fits, sealing surfaces, and inspection needs for review before ordering.

Allow for the cutting tool

Round milling cutters leave a radius in internal pocket corners. Add appropriate internal radii instead of requiring sharp square corners. If a square mating part must fit, discuss corner relief with KRC.

Sharp corners: reviewAllow an inside radius
Illustration only. Radius and tool access depend on the actual part.

Keep features accessible

Deep narrow pockets, long small-diameter holes, undercuts, and thin walls can increase machining difficulty. Give the cutter room to reach the feature and avoid unnecessary depth.

There is no single wall thickness or depth limit that works for every material and shape. Send difficult features for review rather than assuming a successful upload guarantees manufacturability.

02 / Flat sheet parts

Laser cutting design guidelines

Upload a clean 2D DXF containing only the profiles to be cut. For supported signs and simple shapes, the Laser Template Builder creates the geometry for you.

RequirementOnline quoting
File format2D DXF cut profiles. Send other formats or custom engraving artwork to KRC for review.
Maximum part size24 × 40 inches (609.6 × 1016 mm) laser bed. The chosen stock sheet may impose a smaller usable size.
Minimum part size0.5 × 0.5 inch (12.7 × 12.7 mm).
Minimum feature0.040 inch (1.016 mm).
Minimum hole diameter0.050 inch (1.27 mm).
Minimum web0.060 inch (1.524 mm) of connecting material between nearby cuts.
Accuracy and fitThe laser page lists typical ±0.005-inch positional accuracy. This is not a universal finished-part tolerance or press-fit guarantee. Kerf, material, thickness, and heat affect fit.

Clean up your DXF

  • Use closed outer profiles and closed cutouts for holes.
  • Remove duplicate and overlapping entities.
  • Remove dimensions, text notes, borders, hatching, and construction lines from the cut file.
  • Keep geometry flat and at the intended final size.
  • Check for tiny gaps, stray lines, and unintended cutouts.
  • Confirm the displayed units and dimensions after upload or scaling.

Allow for kerf and material variation

Kerf is the width of material removed by the laser. It affects holes, tabs, slots, and mating edges. Sheet thickness also varies from its nominal value.

Discuss press fits and close-fitting assemblies with KRC. A small test part can help establish fit before a larger run. Do not apply an assumed kerf offset without agreeing on the approach.

Keep stencil centers connected

The centers of letters such as A, B, D, O, P, and R can fall out when the letter is cut through a sheet. Add bridges or choose a stencil font when the center must remain attached.

Conceptual cut paths, not production-ready dimensions.

Match the material to the service

The CO₂ laser service cuts the approved nonmetal sheet materials shown in the quote tool. It does not cut metal. Use the CNC quote tool for machined metal parts.

Do not submit PVC, vinyl, unknown plastics, or customer-supplied sheet for laser processing without approval. Check the materials page for listed options.

Laser quotes cover flat cut profiles. Bending, assembly, coatings, and other secondary work are not included. Engraving is included only on templates that explicitly offer it.

When the details matter

Send these requirements for review

Requirements beyond the online quote

  • Tolerances tighter than the online offering or geometric tolerances.
  • Required surface finishes, coatings, plating, or heat treatment.
  • Material certifications, traceability, or special inspection reports.
  • Large parts, assemblies, difficult tool access, or unlisted materials.
  • Safety-critical applications or specified industry standards.

What to include

  • Final CAD model and a dimensioned drawing, if available.
  • Material grade and quantity.
  • Units, critical dimensions, and tolerances.
  • Thread callouts and feature locations.
  • Finishing, inspection, and application requirements.
  • Revision identifier and requested delivery date.
A few common questions

Before you order

Do I need both a model and a drawing?

A STEP model is required for the online CNC quote. A drawing is useful for threads, critical fits, tolerances, finishes, and requirements that geometry alone cannot communicate. Send special requirements for review before ordering.

Can KRC help if I only have a sketch?

Yes, send the sketch and explain the part’s purpose. KRC can review whether design assistance is appropriate. Design work is quoted separately.

Will resizing a laser file change all of its features?

Uniform scaling changes the whole profile, including hole sizes, slots, and connecting webs. Recheck every critical dimension and minimum feature after resizing.

Where do I start once my file is ready?

Use CNC quoting for STEP files or laser quoting for DXF files. See how it works for the complete ordering process.

Have a part that needs a closer look?

Email your model or drawing, quantity, material, and project requirements. KRC will review the job with you.
