The useful starting point

Start with 6061 when you need a practical balance of weight, machinability, corrosion resistance, and cost.

01 /

Material overview

6061 is a heat-treatable aluminum alloy. It is widely used for general machined components because it combines useful mechanical properties with ready availability in common stock forms. The temper matters: an alloy name alone does not define strength. KRC’s current selector identifies T6/T6511 stock conditions.

02 /

Where it fits

6061 suits mounting plates, spacers, fixture blocks, adapters, and housings. Choose a different route when wear, very high strength, or electrical conductivity is the main design driver. A large flat part can still distort as stock is removed, so avoid assuming that a broad thin plate will remain flat merely because it is aluminum.

03 /

Design considerations

Keep pockets open, use generous inside radii, and avoid deep threads that add no joint benefit. Thin ribs and large unsupported faces need deliberate design. If welding is part of a later assembly, remember that welding changes the local properties of heat-treated material.

KRC ordering route

Use the CNC quote for supported geometry and quantities. Specify 6061 and the required temper consistently on the drawing. Surface finishing and any material documentation must be part of the accepted scope; a bare alloy selection does not include anodizing.
