Choose UHMW for sliding and impact behavior; choose a more dimensionally stable material for rigid, close-fitting detail.
Material overview
UHMW is ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. It is often used where low friction, abrasion resistance, and impact toughness are useful. Its relatively compliant behavior is a benefit in some wear parts and a limitation in precision mechanical geometry.
Where it fits
Guide strips, wear pads, and protective contact blocks are typical design directions. UHMW is less suitable when a thin feature must act like a rigid metal reference surface. Sustained loads can cause creep, and thermal expansion matters in long strips and constrained assemblies.
Design considerations
Leave clearance for temperature-driven movement and avoid trapping a long strip between rigid end stops. Broad fastener support helps reduce localized compression. Fine threads, delicate fins, and very thin walls are poor default choices for this material.
KRC ordering route
KRC’s CNC selector lists natural/white UHMW. Define thickness, mounting geometry, and the functional contact area. Tight dimensional expectations need to account for compliance, temperature, and measurement force; a metal-style tolerance is not automatically practical on every UHMW feature.
