Choose the sheet for its end use first, then choose thickness and design the joints around its real dimensions.
Acrylic for appearance
Acrylic is useful for display parts, signage, windows, and visible panels. Clear and colored options have different availability in the quote selector. It is relatively brittle, so closely spaced holes, sharp corners, and tight fasteners can create cracks. Acrylic is not a direct impact-resistant substitute for polycarbonate.
MDF for consistent faces
MDF has a uniform fiber structure and flat faces that suit patterns, stencils, and indoor templates. Cut edges darken, and narrow features can be fragile. Ordinary MDF is moisture sensitive; surface coating does not make an unsuitable outdoor design automatically weatherproof.
Plywood for grain and layered structure
Baltic birch plywood offers a wood appearance and cross-laminated construction. Actual thickness can differ from the nominal value, and internal glue lines influence the cut. A tab-and-slot assembly needs a fit allowance based on actual stock rather than a nominal fraction alone.
Use supported stock
The material selector defines current online options. Unknown plastics, coatings, and composite formulations are not interchangeable with listed laser stock. Material selection should account for both process compatibility and end-use performance. The guides focus on the supported sheet families and do not imply that every plastic can be laser cut.
